Research Paper: Changing (or Maintaining/Increasing) a Habit
Due: End of Week 5 (200 points)
The objective of this assignment is to observe and analyze a habit (good or bad) from different learning perspectives.
You will be required to write a 1,750-word minimum paper. You should have a title page and references. No abstract is needed. Entire paper must be written in APA format. Follow outline below regarding format of the paper.
For this assignment you will select a habit that you wish to change (or maintain/increase) and are willing to tell me about. All papers are confidential as I will be the only one reading them and will keep all information to myself.
A review of literature that includes exactly four peer reviewed journal articles should precede a method section and a discussion section.
In the introduction, you are required to describe the acquisition and maintenance of the habit from at least one psychological perspective (behavioral, cognitive, biological, social-cultural, etc.). You can bring in more than one perspective if you feel they apply.
This will be followed by a concise method section (see details below). Basically, the Participants subsection is about you and the Procedure subsection should describe the techniques or combination of techniques (e.g. using reinforcement, punishment, etc.) that you will employ. You will need to design an intervention to change (maintain or increase) the habit over the course of one week.
The next part of the assignment (discussion section) is to analyze the results of your intervention.
Please follow the outline as there are several specific requirements for each section.
The first paragraph should begin to set the foundation for the reader to understand the focus of the paper. Review of literature (ROL) from your references should be included here (exactly four peer reviewed journal articles); you are laying the foundation here. Inform reader of past research relating to the acquisition and maintenance of the habit from at least one psychological perspective (behavioral, cognitive, biological, social-cultural, etc.). You can bring in more than one perspective. Transition paragraph should lead reader into method section; objective of paper should be clarified here.
Participants (1 paragraph) Report the demographics of the case studies involved in the study being analyzed: age, sex, ethnicity, level of education, and anything else that might be pertinent to the study.
Procedure (1 paragraph) Describe step-by-step how you conducted the study (one-week intervention); for instance, describe the settings, times, duration, etc. in which the data were collected.
Describe in detail how you attempted to change (or maintain, increase) the habit. Describe the techniques or combination of techniques (e.g. using reinforcement or punishment) that were most helpful in eliminating or maintaining/increasing the habit.
Analyze the effectiveness of your program by keeping track of your progress over the week noting: (1) if the intervention is working, (2) how many times have you engaged in the behavior after completion of the intervention (for example, in the last 24 hours), and (3) any additional information about your experience (e.g., changes in techniques).
Compare/contrast your results with what your ROL suggests. Emphasize how theory relates (or did not relate) to applied setting (real world).
Include two media reports (magazine, newspaper, or Internet article) that relate to the habit you have been dealing with. Compare/contrast these two media reports with ROL (journal articles).
Describe any limitations in the study?
What would you have done differently to make this a more effective study? These specific future recommendations should conclude your discussion.
Reference section will consist of exactly four peer-reviewed journal articles and two media reports. You cannot use your textbook as a source; however, you can use textbook to help locate original articles.
